What Can Cause A Heel Spur?

Patients who have a calcium build-up on the heel bone most likely have a heel spur. It can come from the medical condition that is known as plantar fasciitis, or there may be an abnormal amount of calcium accumulation under the heel. A heel spur looks like a small hook, and having an X-ray taken will generally identify this ailment. It can gradually produce chronic pain, and walking can be difficult. A common cause of heel spurs is when the connective tissue starts to become thin. This can happen as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or possibly from having existing medical conditions like arthritis. There are several treatment methods that are available for heel spurs. If you suffer from heel pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can make a proper diagnosis, and offer the treatment techniques that are best for you.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander from Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Has My Child Broken a Toe?

A broken toe is a common injury children can incur that parents have to properly address. It can happen as a result of stubbing the toe into a piece of furniture, or from dropping a heavy object on the toe. If the break is severe, the toe may become dislocated. This is noticeable as the bone protrudes from the toe. Many parents will take their child for an X-ray, and this is helpful in determining if a fracture has occurred. An effective treatment method for mildly broken toes can consist of buddy taping. This is accomplished by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it. This is generally effective in providing the support that is needed as the healing process occurs. Common symptoms of a broken toe can include immediate bruising, and it is often difficult to walk. If your child has broken a toe, it is strongly suggested that you seek the advice of a podiatrist who can make a proper diagnosis and offer effective treatment methods.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander from Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

The medical term for Sever’s Disease is calcaneal apophysitis. It is an uncomfortable foot condition that can affect active teenagers and children as they reach adolescence. It occurs as a result of different growing speeds of the tendons and growth plate in the heel. This can cause the tendons to become tight, putting stress on the heel. Children who frequently participate in running and jumping activities and young teenagers who are overweight may experience Sever’s disease. Mild relief can be found when the affected foot is elevated, and it may help to relieve swelling on the heel by wearing compression socks. If your child or teen is limping, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can help them find the right treatment options.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. James D. McAlexander from Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

The calcaneus is another name for the heel bone, located at the back of the foot. Sometimes, an injury to this area can be severe enough to cause tiny cracks to appear in the bone. This type of stress fracture may occur due to repetitive stress to the heel bone from activities such as running, or due to sudden, high-stress injuries, such as a car accident, a fall from a high position, or a traumatic twisting of the ankle. The symptoms of a calcaneal stress fracture include heel pain, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty walking. If you are experiencing the symptoms of a calcaneal stress fracture, please see a podiatrist.
