Understanding Ingrown Toenails

Most people misunderstand the seriousness of an ingrown toenail unless they experience one. Ingrown toenails frequently affect the big toe and result from the nail growing into the skin, instead of over it. Pain and discomfort are often the beginning signs that an ingrown toenail has developed. When left untreated, it may become infected, bleed, and there may be discharge or pus. An ingrown toenail can be caused by trimming the toenails incorrectly, wearing shoes that are too tight, and genetic reasons. Occasionally, the toe will feel better when soaked in warm water and a cotton swab can be used to gently push the skin away from the nail. This is a temporary fix for mild relief. A permanent solution can be found at a podiatrist's office. People who have recurring ingrown toenails often seek the expertise of this type of doctor, who can effectively treat it. An infected ingrown toenail may qualify for surgery, and it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist to determine the best course of treatment for you.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Possible Benefits of Walking Barefoot

There are several benefits that can occur when parents encourage their children to walk barefoot. These can include improvements in balance, walking, and range of motion. Additionally, the joints and muscles in the feet can become stronger, as a result of the toes gripping the floor. Research has indicated that the nervous system is stimulated when a child walks barefoot, and pressure points are used to send messages to various parts of the body. Children often become more aware of their surroundings when they walk barefoot outside. Walking on different surfaces such as grass, sand, leaves, and concrete can help the child to become more sensitive to nature. Their motor skills may be improved, and it may be easier to jump and balance during playtime activities. It is advised that sunscreen is applied to the child’s feet, and as a precaution against getting a sunburn, shoes may need to be worn outside on a particularly sunny day. If you would like more information about the benefits of having your child walk barefoot, please ask a podiatrist who can help you with the information you are seeking.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Paring Down Foot Corns

Foot corns are just one of the many types of foot conditions that can be of great annoyance to a patient. A corn is a hard, thick spot of skin that typically develops on a person’s foot as the result of friction or pressure. One way in which a medical professional, such as a podiatrist, might attempt to treat persistent corns is by paring down the affected skin. More specifically, a podiatrist can use a scalpel blade to make the skin less thick. In some cases, multiple sessions may be needed for a podiatrist to completely pare down the affected skin. After a corn has been pared down, there is a chance that it may return if the patient does not wear footwear that fits properly. If you have corns, it is recommended that you contact your podiatrist today for treatment.

If you have any concerns regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Various Reasons the Feet May Become Swollen

The medical term for swelling is called edema. Edema can be caused for several reasons and it is common in the feet and ankles. Many pregnant women can have swollen feet, and this symptom may become more pronounced during the third trimester. Additionally, existing kidney disease may contribute to developing edema, and diabetic patients may see evidence of this on their feet. Sitting on a plane or in a car for extended periods may cause this condition to occur due to a lack of movement, which may cause reduced blood circulation. People who have edema may have skin that is shiny around the affected area and gravity can increase the swelling in the feet. Edema may be controlled by implementing lifestyle changes. These can include reducing salt intake, wearing compression stockings, and elevating the feet above the heart. If you are experiencing swollen feet, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat this condition.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

It's Time for Beautiful Feet

You don't need an excuse to have beautiful nails. Step outside without worrying about the appearance of your feet.

Many people who develop stress fractures often continue to run through the pain that this foot condition can cause. It is a hairline fracture and may be more prevalent among people who have osteoporosis. The foot bones absorb the stress of the body, and this can easily occur if proper warmups and cool-downs are not performed. Symptoms that are generally associated with stress fractures include bruising, swelling, and tenderness in addition to difficulty in completing daily activities. Some factors can contribute to incurring a stress fracture. These can consist of having previous fractures, a lack of vitamin D, or running and jumping on uneven surfaces. An MRI is often needed to properly diagnose a stress fracture and an X-ray may follow. If you feel that you have developed this type of fracture, please consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment techniques, which often begin with resting and elevating the affected foot.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander from Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Gig Harbor, WA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Common Causes of Toe Pain

Toe pain can be very uncomfortable. The toes contain bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. An injury or infection to any one of these components can lead to toe pain. Pain in the toe region can be throbbing, piercing, continuous, or can briefly last. Aging can cause toe pain as the structures in the toe are subjected to so much wear and tear over a lifetime and this, in and of itself, can lead to toe pain. An injury to the toes, such as a stress fracture, dislocation, or sprain can damage them and cause pain. Bunions, athlete’s foot, and arthritis are also common causes of toe pain. When toe pain is the result of other physical conditions like peripheral arterial disease, or if it gives rise to other complications and leads to an infection, it can be dangerous, and a medical professional should be contacted immediately. If you are experiencing toe pain, you may or may not know the cause. A podiatrist can assist in providing a diagnosis and suggest an appropriate treatment.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Most severe toe pain is caused due to a sports injury, trauma from dropping something heavy on the toe, or bumping into something rigid. Other problems can develop over time for various reasons.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Trauma
  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Sprains
  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Dislocations

When to See a Podiatrist

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week
  • Signs of infection
  • Continued swelling
  • Pain that prevents walking

Diagnosis

In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

What Does the Cuboid Bone Do?

There are many bones located in the foot that each play an important role in helping the foot function and move properly. The cuboid bone is one such bone. Located on the outer side of the foot in the midfoot area, this small bone is almost cubical in shape. It is critical to the foot because not only does it provide stability, it also facilitates sufficient weight distribution throughout the feet. It is important to note that the cuboid bone additionally aids in toe movement. A number of ligaments are also attached to the cuboid bone, including the birfurcate ligament and the cuboideonavicular ligament. The cuboid bone alone does not usually fracture by itself in the foot. However, it is susceptible to a condition known as cuboid syndrome, which can move the bone out of alignment. If you want to learn more about the cuboid bone, make an appointment with your local podiatrist today.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander from Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

What Can Cause Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

There is a nerve that stretches from the back of the leg to the inner ankle, and this is known as the tibial nerve. When this becomes pinched as a result of an injury, it may lead to tarsal tunnel syndrome. Additionally, this condition may occur in people who have flat feet or who have an existing tissue mass or cyst. It is helpful to rest the affected foot as often as possible as this may reduce some of the associated swelling. In severe cases, anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed, and it can be beneficial to wear custom-made orthotics. Numbness and a tingling sensation are symptoms that people can experience when they have this condition, and it can be quite uncomfortable. If you are afflicted with tarsal tunnel syndrome, it is strongly urged that you consult with a podiatrist who can effectively determine the cause, as well as implement the correct treatment methods.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Dr. James D. McAlexander of Gig Harbor Foot and Ankle Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.
